well, there’s supposed to be a biological attack in 2013 or by 2013 or whatever the news said. maybe those aztecs were onto something.

the economy is now officially in a recession, but britney spears is yet again the star of the news. okay, so yeah, i’m guilty of watching her “documentary” on MTV when it premiered, but really now, does our country REALLY think her life is more important than the economy?

in other news, carli sue is a BITCH. we put a muzzle on her the other night. pictures of the event are on facebook.

R.I.P. leroi moore

alex just called me to give me the sad news that leroi moore died today. leroi was the dave matthews band’s saxophonist. not much information is being given about his death other than that he succumbed today to injuries suffered in an ATV accident on june 30th.

ever since i was 14, the dmb has been my favorite band. i’ve gone through a lot of stuff with their music, and when you really become attached to a band, their members become extremely familiar and close to your heart…even if you don’t even know them.

of dave, stefan, carter, and boyd, leroi’s always been my favorite. each band member is incredible in his own way, but i’ve always admired how talented leroi was with various wind instruments.

i don’t know what dmb’s gonna do. i’m sure they’ll go on just fine, but things won’t be the same. i am really, really gonna miss his presence. my heart hurts so much for these guys and leroi’s family and friends.

have you heard yet about the woman who had all her husbands killed? i’ve heard of cases like this before, but it’s always interesting when they come up in the news. the woman’s 76 years old and from georgia. according to reports, she was a lady who loved fine things and collected $25,000 in life insurance and extra social security benefits when one husband mysteriously passed away. i guess it didn’t matter whether or not this guy had cheap life insurance; this woman still gladly collected what she could get once the deed was done! the reports also say that the woman and one of her husbands owed $206,300 on 43 credit cards. ouch, and i thought i charged a lot!

i love how this lady looks like someone who would come in the library and check out a lot of nora roberts books and wish me “a good weekend, honey.” haha.

but at least i get money out of it!

airborne, the shit i have sworn by for over 2 years now, has been slammed and settled with a class-action lawsuit of $23 million. according to the judgment, there’s “no credible evidence” that airborne can prevent colds. the lawsuit was based upon false advertisement.

anyway, so now you can claim money for up to 6 boxes of the stuff, which is good since i’ve bought at least that or more, and i think i might e-mail the folks and ask them if i can ship them the plastic tubes i have of airborne itself as proof of purchase in order to get some more cash. seriously, now, that’s some expensive shit. i also have kids’ cherry-flavored airborne that you place on your tongue (it tastes god-awful). i’ll probably send that shit in, too. money, money, money.

The preferred proof of purchase is a copy of the original receipt that identifies the Airborne Product purchased and the amount paid for it. But if you don’t have a copy of the original receipt, you can also submit other proof that you bought the Products, such as an online order form, a receipt provided post-sale by the store (even a hand-written one), or a detailed credit card statement. The essential thing is for you to provide evidence that you bought a specific product and how much you paid for it.

won’t the barcodes do justice? they usually do when you have to provide proof of purchase for other shit, like some free stuff you get from the cereal box.

# If you do not have a Proof of Purchase, you can still file a Proof of Claim for up to 6 boxes of Airborne Products. You will get a refund that is based on the average retail price of the Product: $10.50 per box of Seasonal, $2.75 per box for Gummi, and $6.99 per box for all other Airborne Products.
# If you have proofs of purchase for some Products but not for all that you bought, you may file a claim for refund of all Products for which you do have proofs of purchase, plus up to 6 additional Products that you bought but for which you don’t have a proof of purchase.

…sweet. so i literally could make…*thinks* i know i’ve bought like 4 of these bottles before and i don’t have any proof of it. i have 2 more bottles on hand and then 2 boxes of the kids’ stuff. so that’s approximately…*be patient, kt is bad at math* $56 i can get back. wow. believe i’ll file a claim today before that $23 million is gone.

before turmoil erupted on here yesterday, i was planning to blog about this, but i’ve postponed doing so until now. so here goes.

RENT is ending. yes, the musical near and dear to my heart is ending its 12-year broadway stay. the nederlander will go up for sale and some other musical will take its place. RENT will now be able to be performed in high schools and colleges everywhere, which is rather exciting, but broadway will forever be changed.

what’s happening is really not THAT big a deal because it doesn’t mean the show is over forever. while the show will still tour, it will no longer have a permanent home and the RENT lotteries are over. since i don’t live anywhere near new york city, it’s really not that big a deal to me, but i can see why RENTheads everywhere are so sad. to many, the nederlander is a second home. many have spent countless hours inside and outside that theatre, waiting for the show to begin or to meet a cast member. if i lived in new york, i would probably be one of those people.

what saddens me, i guess, is the fact that new york will now be RENT-less. not that it really should matter to me because i’ve only been twice, but the ads for RENT, whether you’ve seen it or not, have become somewhat of a new york city staple, and now they’ll be gone forever, too.

oh, well…we all knew it would happen some day. just 10 years on broadway is always a big deal, so RENT’s broadway demise was inevitable.

and he was just outed by his maker. i’m sure the religious right is going to have a field day with this aspect of the “witchcraft” kids’ books they already despise so much.

thomas, stu, and i went with some friends of mine from work last night to see 30 days of night. the premise for the movie is great– the northernmost town in the U.S. (somewhere in alaska) experiences one month where there is nothing but darkness and all these vampires come and terrorize the town– but the vampires themselves just gave me a headache. they screeched like raptors and pterodactyls (i spelled that correctly without even looking it up, thank you very much). not that i know what dinosaur screeches sound like besides what i witnessed in jurassic park, but i have a pretty good gut sensation about the whole idea. either way, their shrieking was absolutely annoying. the vampires spoke in some kind of clicking tongue that reminded me of some african tribe, which didn’t bother me nearly as much as the english translations of their clicks. their leader was about half ridiculous. he had all srts of philosophical bullshit to feed (”there is no hope; only hunger and pain.”). oh, shut up already, you sad excuse for a vampire confucius. and of course, there was the typical horror movie “wtf is that bitch thinking? RUN, bitch, RUN!” stuff. needless to say, it wasn’t that great of a movie.

so we got to talking about good vampire movies and, of course, interview with the vampire came up. so we rented it and watched it and i fell in love with that movie all over again.

i got my LSAT scores back. mine went up…by a whopping two points. well, whatever. i’ll still apply to law school, but there’s not much i can do about my shitty score.

anyways. i’m going to douglas today. it’s birthday weekend for kt. yay!

so first there was live aid…then live 8…and now there’s live earth. i think it’s good that so many artists and celebrities are using their notoriety to raise awareness for global warming and the destruction we are causing our earth. i know i’m not the first person to think of this, but i have a few issues with this all:

1. the use of private jets and fuel to get to the concerts. supposedly, the presenters and the performers are supposed to be purchasing carbon credits…but really, now, that’s an awful lot of carbon to transport that many people around the globe for this one event. and i wonder exactly how many of these attendees are traveling long distances to see these shows? i’m sure that a majority of them do not have hybrid cars, either, because let’s be realistic– hybrids are expensive.

2. the energy used by the concerts. organizers of live earth say that the concerts are using sustainable lighting. well, okay. but what about the energy used by the instruments (amps, etc.)…the screens…the sound systems…?

3. the waste produced by the concert attendees. there’s no getting around this one. of course, there are many alternatives to an unfathomable sea of styrofoam and plastic cups; i’m sure the concert will be providing any beverages in cups made from recycled paper, and there will be recycling bins and all that jazz. even if the organizers do their damndest to prevent waste, it is still inevitable. think of all the plastic bottles and bags that will accumulate around the world during these concerts. we are one world dependent on plastic. this is all inevitable.

4. the energy used by the viewers. let’s face it, most of the world is not going to be able to actually attend these concerts, so they’re going to watch them from the comfort of their own homes. and there’s more energy being used right there. lights on, TVs on, tivos recording, computers streaming…you name it, there it is.

i don’t have a problem with live earth. personally, i do see that there are problems with the environment, and i do believe that we are harming it to no end and our dependency on oil needs to be greatly reduced; however, i will honestly admit that i personally do NOT do my part to prevent all this destruction. i don’t recycle, i drive unnecessarily, i leave the lights on, i don’t use eco-friendly products…but i don’t litter. i digress.

my real issue with live earth is that it seems very hypocritical to its own cause. perhaps i’m wrong on many of these issues i’ve addressed, but i don’t see how several of them can be avoided. thoughts?

so the entire world is mad at this guy. i mean, my god, what kind of idiot knows he has tuberculosis and decides to go ahead and do whatever he wants instead of staying in a hospital? admittedly, yeah, he had plans to get married in greece and have a honeymoon and all that, and he didn’t know at the time that he had an incurable strain of the disease, but you think he’d have more sense than to fly around the world! and get this, his father-in-law is a CDC microbiologist who specializes in the spread of TB. ironic, no?

what an idiot. really. justin also mentioned in his blog that the guy flew to montreal and drove across the border without being checked. and this just adds to the argument that he held total disregard for anyone else’s health while he did his little thing. if i were on his plane, i would find his hospital room, barge in, and kick him in the face. idiotic asshole!!!

for those of you unaware, he was an televangelist who avidly dabbled in politics. while some ministers promote the good of christianity, he was a hate-promoting, radically right-winged old man. it’s really too bad he couldn’t have stayed away from the government. i’m sorry his family has to suffer, but he really sucked as an individual.

i wrote the above earlier today, and i didn’t know how to say what i wanted to say tactfully yet sarcastically, so i ditched the article, although wordpress saved it as a draft. anyway, i think perez hilton summed it up best:

Rev. Jerry Falwell, a big fan of the gays, passed away on Tuesday.

i couldn’t stop laughing. to make matters worse, the title of the post is “lights out.”

oh, god, please forgive me for being amused. i am totally going to hell. it really will be sad when billy graham dies, though. he doesn’t make me mad like jerry falwell did and pat roberson does. but anyways, yeah. so jerry falwell’s dead. save the hate comments for your mama, please.

flight 93…the movie

so i just watched flight 93 on hbo. i absolutely fucking lost it at the end. i sat and sobbed for minutes after it was over, my head in my hands the entire time. if i were in logic class right now, lavonna would say that this movie, albeit based on a tragedy, is loaded with fallacies…particularly the appeal to pity. but fuck fallacies. it is SAD. it is a sad, fucked thing, and it really happened. i found myself overwhelmed with grief all over again. when they “captured” the 2 hijackers, i found myself cheering inside and wanting to gouge those hijackers’ eyeballs out.

the memories of 9/11 came flooding back when i watched this. obviously, my 9/11 experience was much more humble than the tragic ones shown in the movie, but every american has their own personal story of that day. i’ve told mine on this blog before, a few years back. it’s not that interesting, but it lives in my mind as if it weren’t 5 years ago but just a few weeks ago. images of 9/11 still affect me tremendously– the videos of the burning, collapsing world trade center…the jumping people…the plane hitting the tower…the smoking pentagon…the smoking skyline of new york city…the rubble of the crash site in pennsylvania– everytime i see these images, i get rather emotional.

where the hell is osama? we’ve been asking that for over 5 years now, and nobody seems to care about him anymore.

i must say, i am thoroughly impressed at VSU’s prompt response to the virginia tech tragedy…VSU has implemented a campus alert thing where if any emergency happened on campus, you would be contacted by phone. make sure you login to banner and go to “personal information” to update your campus alert number. i know it’s not likely any of this would happen here, but that’s what the people of blacksburg, virginia thought, too.

furthermore, visit this area of the site to get any advice on stress, shock, etc. regarding the situation. although this happened two states away, VSU is offering counseling to anyone who wants it or feels they need it.

the final count– let’s hope it’s the final count– is at 33 dead, including the gunman. i looked earlier at the virginia tech facebook page, where all these students are in dismay about the whole situation. i can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through. i know this event is bringing back memories of columbine for everyone…i know it is especially for me. what a tragedy. some people on the cbs message boards were bitching about how this is bush’s fault. now, i know i’m always one of the first to find bush at fault for everything, but that accusation is absolutely absurd. how on earth can that man be involved with this? because gun control laws aren’t strict enough, you argue. let me make it known that i am, by no means, a gun nut. i do not come from a family of gun-lovers, nor do i know any people personally who are. i respect a person’s right to own a gun. i respect their right to protect themselves. i admittedly do not know just how strict gun laws are in this country– according to michael moore, they’re not strict enough– because i have never tried to purchase a gun, nor do i know anyone who has. i am 100% for gun control and strict gun laws, but guns do not fire themselves…people do. today’s tragedy is going to undoubtedly escalate into a once again heated debate on gun control in this country, and while i feel utter sympathy for those involved in today’s horrific dilemma, i do not feel sympathy for the idiot that said this was bush’s fault.

that was all rather random and poorly constructed. my apologies.

i am not a holy person by any means. i am not overly religious, but i do believe there is a god, and i do believe he needs to hear us now. i am asking each of you to please pray for all the victims of the virginia tech school shooting and their families and friends during this time.
